Start your day with a cold shower!
Taking a shower is a wonderful way to start or end your day. Many people find it difficult to get away from that warm stream, but would you also experience this if it were a cold one? Many shower in the morning to wake up peacefully, but you could start your day even better if you took a cold shower. Many people take cold showers for a few minutes every day, but many people don't know about the health benefits of a cold shower. I'll give you six reasons why cold showers are better for you!
If cold showers aren't for you, try taking a cold shower
After a visit to the beach or on a very hot summer day, it's sometimes nice to take a cold shower. The last thing you want is a hot shower. A cold shower feels wonderful on your warm body. Outside of those days, cold showers aren't for everyone, and that's understandable. What you can try instead is a cold rinse. To help you with that, here's a plan:
Finished with your regular shower? Turn your shower faucet to the coldest setting and try holding it for 30 seconds. You might pull away and at most rinse your hair with cold water, but hold on! Then turn the faucet back down to a comfortable warm water temperature for you. This is usually around 38 degrees Celsius. Enjoy this for another 30 seconds. Finally, turn the faucet to the coldest setting one more time and hold it for another 30 seconds.
You'll notice that the moment you step out of the shower, you won't feel cold. On the contrary, you'll feel your body warm and tingling. If 30 seconds is too long for you, end your shower by holding it for 10 to 20 seconds. By doing this a few times a week, your body will naturally respond better to the water changing from hot to cold. Eventually, you'll be able to take cold showers for longer. Cold showers offer many benefits.

So why would you choose a cold shower?
Of course, you're not going to take a cold shower for fun. Read on to discover the benefits of cold showers:
- It promotes good blood circulation. Start with a cold shower and get your red and white blood cells pumping. This will deliver more oxygen to all parts of your body.
- You sleep better after a cold shower.
- You wake up more active, which means you get out of bed faster and are therefore more productive in the morning than you think.
- Hot showers are bad for your skin. You've probably stepped out of the shower flushed. This is because your skin is irritated, causing it to sag.
- On the other hand, cold showers give you firmer skin and are therefore good against cellulite.
- Your immune system strengthens and you train your body to adapt to temperature changes. This reduces your risk of catching a cold or the flu.
- Also not entirely unimportant: it's better for the environment and saves a lot of money. Heating water uses more energy!
Proponents of cold showers
Cold showers are hot! A big proponent of cold showers is Wim Hof, also known as The Iceman. He set a world record by sitting in a cabin filled with ice for the longest time possible. The cabin was filled to his neck, and he held it for an impressive 1 hour, 52 minutes, and 42 seconds. Can you imagine lying in a bath of ice-cold water? This might be another step further! He also climbed Mount Everest to 7,500 meters in shorts. For him, cold showers are a piece of cake, which is why he's more than happy to do them. Research shows that a cold shower helps prevent symptoms and makes you less likely to get sick.
Astronaut Wubbo Ockels was also a proponent of cold showers and swimming in cold water. He did this in collaboration with Wim Hof. Together, they attempted to influence his immune system by using the cold. This would have extended his life by one to two years. Until his death, Wubbo Ockels swam through the cold canals of Amsterdam every morning.
