Teak in the bathroom: our maintenance tips!
Teak is the perfect wood to add to your bathroom. Why?
Teak is a solid wood with a dense grain and a high oil content. These properties make teak naturally resistant to moisture and temperature fluctuations. In the bathroom, teak feels right at home. Moreover, teak is an incredibly strong and durable material, so our teak bathroom furniture will last for years!
To extend the life of your teak bathroom furniture or accessory, you can treat and maintain it. Read the tips below for the best way to do this.
Is it necessary to treat my teak bathroom furniture?
All our bathroom furniture and accessories are naturally untreated and are suitable for use in the bathroom without treatment. However, we recommend treating the furniture (for at least six days) with a dirt- and water-repellent two-component oil from Rubio Monocoat before installation.
Monocoat wood oil is not only environmentally friendly, it also protects teak against wear, dirt, and other factors like sunlight and water. A nice bonus is that the oil is available in no fewer than 10 shades, from neutral to black. So it not only ensures optimal longevity of your bathroom furniture, it also colors and protects it in a single coat.

How do you treat teak bathroom furniture with monocoat?
Start by dusting your furniture using a cotton cloth. There's no need to sand the furniture. Stir the oil (component A) thoroughly and pour it into a clean container. Add the hardener (component B) and stir well.
The combination of the oil (A) and the hardener (B) ensures fast drying and a water and dirt-repellent protective layer.
TIP: One 350ml can is sufficient for approximately 14m². Need less? Don't mix the entire contents together. This way, you can reseal and store the cans. Use a ratio of 3 parts A + 1 part B. Mixed oil should be used within 4-6 hours .
Next, apply the oil very thinly to the surface with a cotton cloth. First, use circular motions, then rub in the direction of the wood grain. Once the desired surface is treated, wait 10-15 minutes and (if present) rub off any excess product with a clean, soft cloth in the direction of the wood grain.
TIP: Don't wait much longer than 15 minutes to rub out the excess monocoat. The longer you wait, the harder the oil becomes. So, oil the furniture in stages. This gives you time to gently polish the oiled areas.
After this treatment, let the furniture dry for 1 to 2 days before assembling. After 5 days, the oil is 100% dry, and the furniture can be used.

How can you best maintain your teak bathroom furniture after treatment?
After treating the bathroom furniture with Monocoat, it's best to clean it with lukewarm water and, if desired, a little green soap. Green soap is a mild soap and 99% biodegradable. Avoid harsh cleaning agents (phosphates, ammonia, and acids), which can damage the wood.
With heavy use, the Monocoat protective layer may become scratched after some time. Or, if you want to give the teak a complete makeover, you can lightly sand the bathroom furniture and treat it in the same way as the first Monocoat treatment.
